Biology and Culture[]

Umbarans were native to the plant of Umbara which was in an eternal twilight causing there eyes to adjust more to the dark. They also developed the ability to see into the ultraviolet. The Umbarans were pale near humans with more gaunt faces then a normal Human, and had a ghostly appearance to them. Their piercing blue or sometimes silver eyes were sunken and prone to cold stares. Due to the eternal twilight of their planet, sudden bright flashes of light was able to disorient them. Some off world Umbarans wore eye coverings to guard their sight and compensate for this.

As a people, they had a very secritive and manipulative culture, carving out a path to gain more power and influence. Most had a fairly dark sense of humour and were masters of misdirection. An Umbaran rarely gave away what he or she was truly thinking, as it could be used against him or her as the people were highly competive and driven to raise their position in the caste.

Umbaran society was built on a finely detailed caste system comprised of almost one hundred levels. Only those in the top ten caste levels were given the opportunity to leave their homeworld, which explained their rarity outside the Ghost Nebula. The goal of every Umbraran was to ascend the ranks of the caste system to be rewarded with a higher standing and therefore better life. The only way to ascend higher was to use tactics such as blackmailing, assassination and even subterfuge, which all aided in priming the worthy ascenders for a life in policts; the highest ten caste levels, known as Rootai, made up the council that ruled Umbara, and its members were considered royalty. However, failed plots to ascend the ranks of society were met with harsh penalties, not only for the perpetrator but also their family, which included dropping by at least one level if not more, or being eliminated, as decided by the Rootai. The punishment was dependant upon the rank of the targeted individual and the standing of the perpetrator. Successful plots however, was rewarded with prestige, increase of power and rank, which made it worth the risk of failure.
