Biology and Culture[]

Jawas, the meter-tall scavenger race native to Tatooine, were rodent-like beings with offensive odors and jabbering speech. Jawas remained hidden within coarse cloaks, with only their small, glowing eyes visible in the shadowy folds of their hoods. Jawas traveled in bands, searching for discarded hardware to collect, wrecked ships to salvage, or unattended vehicles to steal. They cleaned and repaired these items, selling and trading them with Tatooine's settlers and those passing through Tatooine's spaceports. They had a reputation as swindlers amongst the moisture farmers for selling outdated droids.

They were extremely passive aggressive, and didn't outright attack beings who insulted them, but rather looked at getting even through business deals. The strong body odor, which was offensive to most beings, for the Jawa carried much information in regards to the health, clan lineage, last meal, maturity, arousal and even mood, and the stench was compounded by the fluid that the Jawas dipped their rough woven robes in to keep their moisture from evaporating in the twin suns of Tatooine.

As a society of scavengers and thieves, Jawas lived by by an unofficial motto: not to look for uses in a salvaged item, but rather to imagine someone else who might find a use for it. Jawas also lived in a tribal culture, where each sandcrawler was lead by a Clan-Chief who was male. However, a female Jawa shaman, who either was Force Sensitive and could perform some 'magics', recovered from a fatal disease and had a hallucinatory vision or was selected and trained by the previous shaman, oversaw the operation of the Jawa clan. Due to her importance, the shaman did not accompany the scavengers in the sandcrawler but stayed in the clan's fortress. As a predominately patriarchal society, the Shaman was the only female given any respect and the Clan-chief often heeded her advice.

Jawa Swap meet

A Jawa swap meet.

In keeping true with scavenging and selling merchandise, the Jawas once a year would converge for a swap meet where they would trade their salvaged goods. It was during this time that information about the shifting desert was shared and young Jawas were married off. Often Jawa parents would engage in intense bartering and negotiations in trading off their son or daughter for goods.
