Biology and Culture[]

Hutts were large gastropods with bulbous heads, thick bodies which end in a muscular tail, and two small arms with limited manipulative ability. A Hutt's head, which comprises most of its upper body, featured two yellow, slitted eyes, a broad upturned nose, and a lipless mouth which spreads from earhole to earhole. A Hutt's nostrils could seal tightly, and this, coupled with their extremely large lungs, allowed the Hutt to remain underwater for long lengths of time. Rarely, a Hutt would be born or develop some hair, which could be as little as facial hair or as much as covering the entire body, suggesting that the ancestors of the Hutt were covered in hair. Hutts were also hermaphrodites.

There were able to slowly move themselves around by using their entire body as a slow, creeping foot. However, it is not uncommon for Hutts to grow so large as to render themselves immobile without the use of repulsors and hover lounges, such as the shell hutt often did. A Hutt's skin resisted all but the most toxic chemical corrosion, and was extremely slippery with mucus and oils making it difficult to grasp. Even in the event of a puncture, a heavy layer of muscle and blubber protected the Hutt's vital organs.

The overwhelming dominant character trait in all Hutts was self-centeredness. Hutts believed that they were the center of the universe, and their desires were important above all else. Their incredible resolve in this belief was allowed them to thrive despite the fact that physically, they are almost completely powerless. While Hutts were known to be one of the longest-lived species in the galaxy, some living over 1000 years. However, it wasn't age that was respected by the Hutts but rather the girth or mass of a Hutt. A very successful Hutt would have servants and slaves seeing to its needs thus allowing it to live a sedimentary life; whereas a skinny Hutt was viewed as adolescent or incompetent. Hutts were infamous for their cruelty and ruthlessness.

Nal Hutta was ruled by a council of the eldest members of the "Clans of the Ancients," Hutt families who could trace their ancestry to the days before the death of Ardos. This council wielded great power and commanded the respect of all Hutts in the galaxy. Family was important in Hutt society, because most Hutts would only have one offspring in their lifetimes. Many Hutts achieved their fabulous wealth because of the fortunes passed down to them by their ancestors.

The Hutts provided the knowledge and insight that fueled trade, both legal and otherwise, throughout the galaxy. While Hutts were held in low regard by the galactic community, it was a fact that without them, many systems that were quite wealthy would be poor, empty worlds barely able to survive. The reason behind this was that while Hutts do not create or manufacture goods, they had a gift to match those with needs to those who could provide, and extracted profit from both. They were the galactic middlemen. Hutts had concentrated their efforts in many vital industries, including the business of crime.

While Hutts were powerful beings, in many ways were totally dependent on others and could not act without first convincing others to act for them. As a result, they had to develop a form of respect or trust in those who were closest to them. Hutts did not leave Nal Hutta without first gathering a group of retainers and attendants: some were slaves, some were employees, and some were merely syncophants. A Hutt's retainers would be extremely loyal to their leader, caught up in a web of hate, fear, and affection which the Hutt spun.

Hutts were megalomaniacs and often compared themselves to gods. They were extremely tough, exceptionally resiliant and wholly amoral beings who enjoyed exercising power over others. Hutts were almost universally despised, even by those who found themselves benefitting from the Hutt's activities. Were it not for the very effective ring of protection which Hutts constantly surrounded themselves with, they would likely have been exterminated within several years.

Special Abilities[]

Force Resistance: Hutts have an innate defense against Force-based mind manipulation techniques and roll double their Perception dice to resist such attacks. However, because of this, Hutts are not believed to be able to learn Force skills.

Story Factors[]

Reputation: Hutts are almost universally despised, even by those who find themselves benefiting from the Hutt’s activities. Were it not for the ring of protection with which the Hutts surround themselves, they would surely be exterminated within a few years.

Self-centered: Hutts cannot look “beyond themselves” (or their offspring or parents) in their considerations. However, because they are master manipulators, they can compromise - “I’ll give him what he wants to get what I want.” They cannot be philanthropic without ulterior motives.

Depleted Population: After the War of Thyferra in 22 ABY, the Hutt Council agreed to wage war with the CSA, taking Nar Shaddaa back, which had been a protectorate and begin expanding their boundaries. This triggered the Hutt War which saw not only the CSA but several other governments, including the Galatic Empire, the Republic and even the Systems Confederation pushing the Hutts back and even taking territories away. This war swiftly fell out of the Hutt's favour with the release of a virus from unknown parties that killed only the Hutts, leaving the slaves and populations intact. Finally with the Treaty of Nar Shaddaa, peace was reestablished with the Hutts giving a tithe to the CSA and governing a smaller territory than before.
